Based on reports from other regions that implemented EMV (Europay, Mastercard and Visa) before the United States began to do so in earnest, the payments industry is expecting an increase in card-not-present (CNP) fraud here. The good news is that other regions are sharing methods they developed for thwarting CNP fraud, so we can build on their experiences. Also, fraudsters aren't the only smart ones. Methods for counteracting attacks on the CNP front continue to evolve. This issue's lead article examines the changing CNP landscape and progress being made to secure our payments.
Also on the EMV front, the EMV Migration Forum changed its name to the U.S. Payments Forum to reflect an expanded focus that, in addition to EMV implementation, addresses further technology implementations, including mobile payments, CNP security solutions and tokenization. And, sadly, in the news, we've also covered the passing of payments industry leader and Western States Acquirers Association co-founder Ken Elderts. He was a friend to many and will be sorely missed.
